What the Records Show

Thomas Long lived in Ward 6 of Fall River, Massachusetts, through three censuses, and in each he gave the same work: teamster. In 1900 the family lived on Chute Street, and the enumerator wrote "Teamster" with no employer, as that census did not ask for one. [1] In 1910 he was a teamster in "city work," and his eldest daughter, Catherine, sixteen, was a cashier at a meat market. [2] In 1920, a widower of 55, he was still a teamster, for the City. [3]

None of the household was recorded at work in a cotton mill. In 1920 his daughter Anna was a hospital nurse; his son William F. was a teamster for a contractor; John was a bookkeeper; Thomas Jr. was an apprentice at a garage; and M. Loretta was a stenographer at a shipyard. [3]
