The Cathcart graft
Robert Cathcart of Tisbury → the 7th Lord
What the tradition claimed
FamilySearch's tree made Robert Cathcart of Tisbury a son of Alan, 7th Lord Cathcart (entered as “Lord Thomas Cathcart”) and Elizabeth Mitchell, and through them carried the family up through the 6th and 5th Lords Cathcart, Marion and David Boswell of Auchinleck, Jean Colquhoun, Isobel Wallace and Campbell of Auchinbreck.
Where the chain breaks
No record supports the link. Charles Banks, the historian of Martha's Vineyard, gives Robert's parents as unknown and “it is not known when he came to this country.” The chain breaks at Robert himself: he is a proven ancestor; everyone above him is not.
